Whenever you head into the hills, it's essential you've got all the right gear. Forgetting to pack your waterproof jacket or a spare jumper is a mistake that could cost you your life.

The following kit lists are suggestions based on the season you'll be walking in. Remember, though, to think carefully about the weather. A warm spring day down at sea might turn out to be a winter blizzard up at 3,000 feet.

If you're looking for more detail or ideas on any of the following, take a look at the Clothing, Footwear or Equipment pages for advice.

Seeing as this is Mad About Mountains, we'll assume you're planning a high-level walk, by which we mean you're aiming to climb up above 500 metres (1,600ft) in Britain or in typically British conditions.

Some of the kit listed above could be shared amongst a group, particularly in summer conditions. For example, the navigation equipment (map and compass) could be shared one between two people.

When considering the optional items, it's really a matter of personal preference. And perhaps an eye to the conditions you'll be facing.

In the winter list, the Ice Axe and Crampons are listed as optional. It is possible to embark upon a winter walk without these items, but you would have to be extremely confident of the conditions you're likely to face. Likewise, if the conditions are such that Ice Axe and Crampons are required, but you've had no training in their use, it's probably better to stay at home!
