The Petzl Shunt is widely used for back-up and protection when ascending, self-belay and abseiling. The Petzl Shunt acts as a replacement to Prussik knots etc. When positioned below a descender it acts as a back-up for an abseil descent. The Shunt locks on the rope as soon as you release it and follows your descent when you press on it.
